This was a lovely chat. “Reading Rainbow”—fans, how can we make the resurrection of this wonderful show happen?

Get up with intention of walking miles and put on dull workout wear. Instead, watch “Downton Abbey” and daydream of wearing clothes like those without looking like a pretentious git or a costumed dancing bear. Monday

Events of recent weeks have really driven home something that lots of us have all heard or said a hundred times and then immediately forgotten. Take care of your health, both physical and mental. More important, perhaps, ENJOY your physical and mental health.  Use it.  Exploit it, even.  Life turns on a dime and then your time is up, even if your life isn’t over. Suck out the marrow indeed.

What Can You Do To Avoid Monsanto's New, Deadlier... →
leftish: Short of completely avoiding processed food, growing your own, and getting to know your local farmer, there is very little you can realistically do to avoid ingesting Neotame, the new and improved version of the neurotoxic artificial sweetner Aspartame. Get it - Neo - new Aspartame? Not even buying certified organic is a reliable way to avoid it, not only in beverages but in all the...

Paul Krugman: Money & Morals →
Lately inequality has re-entered the national conversation. Occupy Wall Street gave the issue visibility, while the Congressional Budget Office supplied hard data on the widening income gap. And the myth of a classless society has been exposed: Among rich countries, America stands out as the place where economic and social status is most likely to be inherited. So you knew what was going to...

You Want a Physicist to Speak at Your Funeral →
thelittlesea: You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that...

Shelter Box is a great idea →
I found out that the Shelter Box we donated went to Kenya, where I hope it benefited someone in a useful way beyond, “Here’s your packet of rice, and good luck with that.” I love that there are new charities such as Shelter Box or charity:water that are being so transparent about where donations go. At the very least, they are doing a really convincing job of faking it.
